The Passion in a Rock Beat
New York Post

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was conceived and created by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR remains a heart-pounding piece of theatre. It is a powerful story, with Mary Magdalene played by Leslie Diamond and Judas for Christ's love. And like so many superstars, Christ finds that his fans and hangers-on are more interested in his trendiness and marketing potential than his talent. The songs are some of Lloyd Webbers' best including Mary Magdalene's lullaby "Everything's Alright" or her lovelorn ballad (reprised by Judas) " I Don't Know How to Love Him." Tim Rice's lyrics are deliciously witty, as when Herod taunts Christ with the line, "Prove to me that you're no fool, walk across my swimming pool."

The set is designed by Richard L. Haptonstall, the lighting is designed by Monique R. Norman and the costume design is by Judy Kazy-Garey. Sound is being designed by James Stephenson.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

Bio: Gary Cherone

Gary Cherone Is a veteran of the Boston rock and roll scene, bursting into the national spotlight as lead singer of the multi-platinum rock group Extreme in 1989. The group went on to have several hits including the hit "Hole Hearted" and the worldwide #1 smash hit "More Than Words" which enabled them to sell more than seven million records world wide.

In 1992 in perhaps one of their finest moments, Extreme stole the show at the "Freddie Mercury Tribute" concert at Wembley Stadium. This performance was aired in over eighty countries and was seen by over one billion people live, making it the most widely broadcast concert in the history of music. Gary was also much honored when invited by the remaining members of Queen to front the band live that evening.

Cherone is also known for his roles with the Boston Rock Opera including being featured in the lead roles of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the 1994, 1996, and 2000 productions.

In 1996 showing his multi-level talent and range, Cherone put together a Jazz Quartet "Hounds Tooth" who performed in the Boston area that year.

Also in 1996 Cherone was invited to replace Sammy Hagar as front man for the legendary rock group Van Halen. Over the next three years the band recorded the certified gold album "Van Halen III" which was co-written by Gary, and went on a worldwide tour that took them from Boston to New Zealand.

In 2000 Gary began a new project, "Tribe of Judah"; a dark Rock/Industrial, creative, no-limits band that reflects his theatrical, hard rock sensibilities. TOJ also shows off his fondness for a more sophisticated and broad style of music reminiscent of his earlier more familiar material which he continues to develop.

The band was recently crowned "Outstanding New Rock Act" at the Boston Music Awards, and Cherone was further recognized with the award for "Outstanding Male Vocalist."
