Gripping. Poignant. Moving.

(Augusta, MI) ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST erupts upon the Barn Theatre stage July 10.  Within the walls of an asylum for the mentally insane, Randal P. McMurphy deals with his fellow patients while he finds himself in a battle of wills with Nurse Ratched who struggles to hold the ward within her matriarchal grasp.

Joe Aiello and Penelope Alex star as the inexorably opposed central characters, the wily con man Randle P. McMurphy and the domineering, tyrannical Nurse Ratched.  Scott Burkell is the well educated but emotionally inhibited Dale Harding, and Roy Brown joins the cast as the humiliated, emotionally adolescent Billy Bibbit.  The grim satire features many Barn apprentices, notably Isaac James as the Schizophrenic Native American narrator Chief Bromden and Alston Brown as the lobotomized and emotionally tortured Ruckley.

Ken Kesey’s searing narrative, inspired by his experiences as a volunteer test subject while working at Agnew correctional facility in San Jose, California, was published in 1962, and shortly after publication the novel was adapted for the stage by Dale Wasserman.  Actor Kirk Douglas purchased the stage and film rights to the play and starred in the first Broadway production of the drama in 1963.  His son, Michael Douglas produced the Academy-Award winning 1975 movie, starring Jack Nicholson.

This powerful, poignant, disturbing and ultimately liberating theatrical experience is not to be missed.  For mature audiences.

JOE AIELLO - Randle Patrick McMurphy

This is Joe’s 27th, yes 27th season as a member of the Barn’s resident Equity company.  Over the course of his Barn career Joe’s talent and versatility won him acclaim for memorable portrayals of Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Daddy Warbucks in ANNIE, Lee in TRUE WEST, Albin/ZaZa in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, Arthur in CAMELOT, Mozart in AMADEUS, Gallimard in M. BUTTERFLY, Nathan Detroit in GUYS AND DOLLS, Herbie in GYPSY, half the town in both GREATER TUNA and A TUNA CHRISTMAS, and he was the Barn’s original Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter in its perennial hit THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW.  A gifted director as well, Joe has earned accolades for his Barn treatments of CABARET, SHE LOVES ME, CHESS, KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, CRIMES OF THE HEART, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, LOST IN YONKERS, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, SWEENEY TODD, and BAT BOY (the last two co-directed with Scott Burkell).  Joe lives in New York City where he is Director of Sales for Match-Tix Group Sales and Promotions and co-owner of Allied/Hit-Tix, Inc.

PENELOPE ALEX - Nurse Mildred Ratched

In her 21 seasons, Penelope has more than established herself on the Barn stage.  Her resume here is highlighted by a series of compelling performances: Aldonza in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Maria in LEND ME A TENOR, and Janet in our first two productions of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW come to mind, as do her own favorites, such as the Beggar Woman in SWEENEY TODD, Golde in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Aurora in KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, and opposite Tom Wopat as Nellie and Annie, respectively, in SOUTH PACIFIC and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. Last season she was seen in OUT OF ORDER and starred as the Wicked Witch of the West in our sleeper hit THE WIZARD OF OZ.  Her longest-running roles are her dearest- wife and mother to Barn Producer Brendan Ragotzy and their children Luke (12), Calli (10), Jacob (7), and Melina (3).  Over the winter Penelope was seen in a guest artist capacity as Agnetha in the Whole Art Theatre’s FROZEN and appeared ‘round the region on radio and television commercials for Denooyer, Behavioral Health Resources, CTS, and was the pale restaurant customer in the spot for Midnight Tan and Cruise.  In addition to her full slate onstage and at home Penelope serves the Barn as Publicist and coordinates the hiring and departmental placement of each season’s apprentice company.  She’s a native of San Jose, CA, and like husband Brendan, is a proud alum of San Jose State University

ALSTON BROWN – Ruckley

Alston is beyond elated to be joining the Barn Theatre family for a third summer season!  A native of Atlanta, GA, Alston is a 2005 graduate of the Valdosta State University Theatre program, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Performance.  Alston’s appearances on the Barn stage include Benjamin in THE GRADUATE, Dr. Lyman Hall in 1776, Yonkers in GYPSY, and Nikko the Flying Monkey in THE WIZARD OF OZ.  Other credits include ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, THE VISIT, MACBETH, WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF? CHILDREN OF EDEN, and THE PAJAMA GAME.  Alston was recently involved with the Off-Broadway production of ARMED AND NAKED IN AMERICA, appearing in David Rabe’s THE EARLIEST USES OF SPIN.  Alston currently lives in New York City and wishes to thank his very dear friends and family for their continued love and support.
